When to seek therapy
Around 1 in 5 adults in the US experience serious mental health issues. Living with a mental health condition can be debilitating across every part of life, personal, work, relationships, education. Someone who's struggling may show one or more of the following signs:
Anxiety, everyone gets stressed and worried, but anxiety is a common symptom of mental health disorders when it interferes with daily life or seems constant. Headaches, trembling, sweating, restlessness, or GI symptoms can all be signs.
Depression, sadness is a common emotion, but persistent sadness lasting several weeks alongside loss of energy and motivation can be a sign of clinical depression.
Emotional outbursts, mood changes are normal, but dramatic, frequent, and sudden shifts, anger, distress, may indicate a mental illness.
Problems with sleep, insomnia is often a sign of substance use or anxiety; sleeping too little or too much can also indicate depression.
Appetite changes, rapid weight loss or fluctuating weight is a common sign of mental health disorders such as eating disorders or depression.
